Why brickwork pointing matters more than it looks

The mortar joints are the part of a brick wall designed to wear. Over the years wind, rain and frost wash the sand out of them until they sit back from the brick face, crumble under a fingernail or drop out altogether. Brick repointing replaces that worn mortar before the damage spreads into the bricks.

Most of the house repointing we carry out is on brickwork from the middle of the last century onwards, where a cement-based mortar is the right material. Victorian and Edwardian houses usually have softer bricks laid in lime, and for those we point people to our lime pointing service for period homes instead.

Repointing is often the first job a wall needs, though not always the only one. Bricks that have flaked or cracked along failed joints can be cut out at the same time through our brickwork repairs service. A crack climbing from the corner of a window may mean the lintel above it needs attention, which is worth sorting before the wall is pointed.

If you would like to understand the process before asking for a price, our brickwork pointing guide explains it in plain terms. You can also check the areas we cover or simply message us a picture of the wall.

What a full repoint includes

Every job has two halves: getting the old mortar out properly, then putting the new joints in well.

Old mortar being raked out of brick joints before repointing

Raking out and preparing the joints

Most of the quality in a repoint comes down to how thoroughly the old mortar is removed.

  • Loose and soft mortar cut out cleanly
  • Joints raked to an even, sound depth
  • Brick edges protected while cutting
  • Dust brushed out of every joint
  • Joints dampened before refilling
  • Windows, doors and drains covered
  • Plants and roots pulled from joints
  • Loose bricks reset in fresh mortar

Filling, finishing and cleaning up

New mortar is packed in firmly and shaped to match the joints already on the house.

  • Sand chosen to match joint colour
  • Mortar weaker than the brick
  • Deep joints filled in layers
  • Flush, bucket handle or weatherstruck finish
  • Recessed joints where the house has them
  • Joints struck once the mortar firms
  • Brick faces brushed clean
  • New work shielded from frost and sun

What you get when we repoint your house

18 years on brick walls

Pointing has been our trade for 18 years, on everything from terraces to detached houses.

Mortar matched to the wall

We mix trial batches until the dried colour sits comfortably beside your old joints.

Profiles that match

The finish on your existing joints is copied so the new pointing looks like it belongs.

Chimneys and gables too

High brickwork weathers fastest, so we repoint stacks and gable ends as well as lower walls.

Priced from your phone

A couple of clear photos is often all we need to give you a free quote.

Patch or full repoint

When only one elevation or a few courses have failed, that is the part we price for.

Joint profiles, mortar mixes and curing

The joint profile is the shape the mortar is finished to, and it affects how a wall weathers as well as how it looks. A bucket handle joint is pressed in with a rounded iron and sheds water well, which is why so many modern houses have it. Weatherstruck joints slope outwards from the brick above, flush joints are rubbed level with the face and recessed joints sit back to throw a shadow. We copy whichever profile is already on the house so a repointed section blends in.

For modern brick we use a cement-based mortar, with the sand picked to bring the colour close to the original joints and lime or a plasticiser added so it works smoothly. The aim is a mix slightly weaker and more porous than the brick. Then any movement or trapped moisture shows up in the joint, which is easy to point again, rather than in the face of the brick.

Fresh mortar needs to cure slowly to reach its full strength. Hot sun and drying wind can pull the water out before it has set, and frost can break up the joints before they harden. We avoid pointing when a frost is forecast, keep new work damp in warm spells and cover it with hessian when the weather turns.

Brick repointing questions

How long does a repoint last?

A repoint done in the right mortar should last for many years. How long depends on how exposed the wall is, how well the joints were raked out and whether gutters and downpipes keep water off the brickwork.

Can you repoint just part of a wall?

Yes. If the damage is limited to one area, such as below a leaking gutter or around a chimney, we can repoint that section and blend it into the joints around it. Colour matching matters most on a partial job, so we take our time over it.

Will the new mortar match my old pointing?

We mix sand and cement to get as close as we can to the colour of your existing joints, and we copy the joint profile. Fresh mortar can look a shade brighter at first and tones down as it weathers.

How much does brick repointing cost?

A standard terraced house front is from £1,850 and a terraced rear is from £1,850. A standard semi-detached front is from £2,450 and a semi-detached rear is from £2,450. Height, access, scaffolding, chimneys and how badly the joints have failed can take a job above that, and detached houses or anything non-standard are priced from photos.

Can you repoint a chimney stack?

Yes. Chimneys take the worst of the weather and often need pointing before the rest of the house. Working at height affects the price, so a photo of the stack from the ground helps us quote.

Should I repoint before dealing with damp inside?

If damp patches line up with failed joints outside, repointing usually comes first because it stops rain getting into the wall. Leaking gutters and downpipes should be put right at the same time, or the brickwork will keep getting soaked.
