Pointing brick and stone

The city's older homes include brick Tyneside flats, stone terraces and Victorian villas. Each needs a slightly different approach to pointing, but all depend on good joints to stay dry.

Stone and older brick are best pointed in lime, through our lime and mortar pointing service. For later brick, our standard repointing uses a cement mix weaker than the brick.

Damaged bricks and stones can be replaced as part of brickwork repairs. If a window head is cracking, see lintel repair in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Three kinds of wall, three approaches

Stone terraces and villas were built in lime. Their joints are often wide and irregular, and cement repointing on stone can damage the edges and trap moisture. We cut out cement carefully and point in lime, matched in colour and texture to the original.

Tyneside flats are usually brick, with the front shared between two homes. Joints on the back offshoots and yard walls wear faster than the front. Villas have tall chimney stacks and gables that catch the weather, and those are often where repointing starts.

Signs a wall needs pointing

  • Stone edges eroding beside cement joints
  • Wide lime joints washed out
  • Chimney stack joints open
  • Damp in a high-ceilinged room
  • Brick joints worn on a flat offshoot
  • Weeds rooted in a gable

Newcastle upon Tyne repointing questions

How much does repointing cost in Newcastle upon Tyne?

A brick terraced front or rear starts from £1,850, or from £2,312.50 in lime, and a semi front or rear from £2,450. Villas are priced from photos. Scaffold, tall chimneys, cement to remove from stone or poor access will lift the figure.

Should a stone terrace be pointed in lime?

Almost always. Stone and lime were laid together, and the lime joint lets damp leave the wall without passing through the stone. Cement on stone tends to push the decay into the face.

Our villa has very wide joints. Can you match them?

Yes. Wide joints on stone need a coarser sand and a careful finish. We match the width, colour and texture so the repointed wall reads the same as before.

We are selling. Is it worth repointing first?

Worn pointing and damp patches often come up on a buyer's survey. Repointing the worst walls beforehand can help, and a written quote is useful to have on file either way.

Do the tall chimneys on a villa need scaffolding?

Usually, yes. Tall stacks need a safe platform so the joints can be raked out and filled properly, and we include the access in the quote.
