Keeping wet weather out of the wall
A wall that faces wet westerly weather needs its joints in good order. Once they start to erode, rain is driven into the wall and the inside rooms begin to feel damp.
For red sandstone and older brick, we use lime pointing, which lets the wall dry between storms. Later brick can take standard brick repointing in a softer cement mix.
Damaged stones or bricks are dealt with through brickwork repairs, and a failing window head through lintel repair in Carlisle.

Sandstone, brick and driving rain
Red sandstone is soft and porous. It takes in rain and lets it out again through the lime joints. When those joints are replaced with cement, the moisture leaves through the stone instead, and the face crumbles. On sandstone terraces we repoint in lime and remove any cement carefully.
Brick terraces facing the same weather often have joints worn back on the west wall while the east wall is still sound. We look at each side separately, so you only pay for the walls that need it.
Signs the joints are letting water in
- Sandstone face crumbling beside cement joints
- Joints eroded on the weather side
- Damp inside on a west wall
- Moss growing in the bed joints
- Mortar dust on the window sills
- Gaps at the gable top

Carlisle repointing questions
How much is repointing in Carlisle?
A brick terraced front or rear here is from £1,850, and in lime from £2,312.50. A semi-detached elevation is from £2,450. Scaffold, chimneys, cement to remove or a lot of damaged stone will lift the price.
Should sandstone be pointed in lime?
Yes, in almost every case. Red sandstone is soft and needs to dry out through its joints. Lime allows that, while a cement joint holds the water in the stone and the face starts to crumble.
Can you just repoint the west wall?
Yes. The side that faces the westerly rain often needs pointing long before the others, and we can price it on its own while leaving the sheltered walls alone.
When is the best time of year to point in lime?
Lime needs mild, settled weather to cure, so late spring to early autumn is the best window. We will not lay it when frost is likely, and we keep it covered against heavy rain.
Can you match old lime mortar?
We look at the sand and lime in the old joints, which often have a warm or reddish tone on sandstone, and blend a mix to sit with them. A small trial patch is a good idea before the whole wall.
