Joints that take the sea weather

Brick walls near the coast face more driven rain and salt than those inland. The mortar wears faster, and once the joints are open, damp gets inside quickly.

Our brick repointing renews those joints with a firm, well compacted mortar. On older soft brick we may suggest lime pointing, which lets the wall dry out between storms.

Broken or salt-damaged bricks are replaced through brickwork repairs. For a failing window head, see lintel repair in South Shields.

Salt, wind and Tyneside flats

Salt settles in the joints and the face of the brick. When it dries it crystallises and pushes out small pieces of mortar and brick. Over the years this leaves joints recessed and sandy, especially on walls facing the sea.

Tyneside flats share one front between two homes, and the backs have yards, offshoots and walls that catch the worst of the weather. We look at all of these, and price the walls that need it.

Signs sea weather has got in

  • Joints recessed and sandy on the sea side
  • White salt marks on the brick
  • Brick faces crumbling at the edges
  • Damp patches inside a front room
  • Yard wall joints open
  • Mortar dust on sills

Steps to a sound wall

  1. Photograph the worst wall

A wide shot of the sea-facing side and a close look at a few joints is ideal.

  2. Agree the work

You get a written price, and we visit first if the wall is tall or awkward.

  3. Cut out and repack

Salt-weakened mortar is raked back and the joints are filled firmly in layers.

  4. Strike and brush off

Each joint is shaped to the house profile and the brick faces are cleaned.

South Shields repointing questions

How much does repointing cost in South Shields?

On a South Shields terrace one elevation starts from £1,850, a semi front or rear from £2,450, and a terraced front and rear together from £3,700. Scaffold, chimney stacks, very exposed walls or a lot of salt-damaged brick will move the price up.

Does salt really damage mortar?

It does. Salt carried in on the wind soaks into the joints, then crystallises as the wall dries and breaks the mortar apart from inside. That is why sea-facing walls tend to need pointing sooner than sheltered ones.

Our flat shares a front with the one upstairs. Can we repoint together?

That is usually the best approach. The front is one wall, so doing both halves at once gives an even finish and means one lot of access instead of two.

When is the best time to repoint on the coast?

Late spring to early autumn gives the mortar the best chance to cure. Strong winds dry fresh joints too quickly, so on exposed days we keep the work covered and damp.

Can you repoint or rebuild our back yard wall?

Yes. Yard walls often take the worst of the weather. If the joints are the only problem we repoint it, and if it is leaning or cracked we can quote to rebuild it in matching brick.
