Mortar on St Helens terraces

The brick terraces built in the glass and coal era are solid walled and mostly laid in lime. A century or more of rain, frost and soot has worn the joints down, and many have been patched in whatever was to hand.

Our brick repointing service rakes out the tired mortar and refills it to keep the weather out. On soft old brick we often recommend lime pointing, so the wall can still dry out through the joints.

Bricks that have already cracked or flaked can be swapped through our brickwork repairs. If there is a crack above a window too, see our page on lintel repair in St Helens.

How these terraces age

Chimney stacks on these terraces were in daily use for generations, and soot and acidic smoke ate into the mortar at the top. Many stacks now have open joints, loose bricks and failed flaunching. Because they are high and exposed, they are often the first thing to repoint.

End terraces have a whole gable open to the weather, and mid terraces tend to wear most at the rear where gutters and downpipes have leaked. In both cases, joints worn back from the face let rain soak in, and frost then breaks up the brick around them.

Is your wall due a repoint?

  • Open joints near the top of the stack
  • Dark staining round worn mortar
  • Gable joints washed back from the face
  • Rear wall wet below the downpipe
  • Bricks loose at the chimney
  • Frost damaged faces on the gable

Four steps to a sound wall

  1. Send us photos

Include the chimney and the gable if you can see them.

  2. Check the mortar

We find out if the wall is lime built and choose a mix to match.

  3. Rake and repoint

Joints are cut back to sound mortar, wetted and filled.

  4. Finish the joints

Each joint is struck and the brick face brushed clean.

Repointing questions in St Helens

What does repointing a terrace cost in St Helens?

Pointing the front or rear of a standard terraced house is from £1,850 and a standard semi-detached front or rear is from £2,450. An end terrace gable, a chimney stack, scaffold or very worn joints can raise the price.

Can you repoint my chimney without scaffolding the whole house?

Often a chimney can be reached with a smaller scaffold or a roof access system. We work out the safest option from photos and include it in the quote.

My end terrace gable is damp inside. Is the pointing to blame?

It may be. Exposed gables let in a lot of rain when the joints fail. Repointing usually helps, but we will also check gutters and the top of the wall.

Why are some bricks crumbling but not others?

Softer bricks, or bricks next to hard cement patches, take the worst of the frost. We can replace the worst ones while we repoint.

Does the whole street need the same mortar colour?

There is no rule, but matching the original look keeps the terrace consistent. We test a small area so you can see the colour before we go on.
