Pointing for older brick

Handmade bricks are softer and more varied than modern ones. They need a mortar that is softer still, so the joints take the weather and the bricks last.

Our lime pointing service is for those walls, and our brick repointing covers later brickwork and extensions.

Garden and boundary walls can be rebuilt through our bricklaying work, and cracks over windows are covered on our page for lintel repair in Shrewsbury.

Historic and Victorian brick

Historic brick buildings in Shrewsbury often have irregular handmade bricks and wide lime joints. These need packing and building up by hand, and the finish should sit back slightly so the soft, rounded brick edges still show instead of being smeared over with mortar.

Victorian terraces were mostly built in lime too, and many have had cement patches added over the years. We remove the cement carefully so the brick edges are not chipped, repoint in a softer mix and match the colour to the original joints so the wall reads as one.

Signs the joints have failed

  • Wide joints hollow behind the face
  • Brick edges crumbling next to cement
  • Damp patches on an outside wall inside
  • Mortar trickling out at the base
  • Moss or plants in the joints
  • Loose bricks on a stack or parapet

How the work goes

  1. Send photos

A photo of the wall and a close-up show us the brick and mortar.

  2. Pick the mix

We choose lime or a soft cement mix and give you a written price.

  3. Rake and fill

Joints are raked by hand where needed and filled in layers.

  4. Finish and cure

The finish is matched to the old joints and the wall stays covered until the mortar has gone off.

Shrewsbury repointing questions

What does repointing cost in Shrewsbury?

One elevation of a standard terrace, front or rear, is from £1,850. A standard semi-detached front or rear is from £2,450. Wide handmade joints, cement removal, chimneys and scaffold can take it higher, and detached homes are priced from photos. Where the wall needs lime, a terraced front or rear starts at £2,312.50 and a semi front or rear at £3,062.50.

Can you repoint the brick panels in a timber-framed building?

Brick infill panels need a soft lime mortar and great care around the timber. Message us a picture of the panels and we will say how we would approach them.

Why do my old bricks look worse after a cement repoint?

Cement is harder than the brick, so water and frost damage the brick instead of the joint. Repointing in lime helps stop it.

Can you match the colour of the original lime?

Yes, as closely as we can. We look at the sand in the old joints and pick one with a similar colour and grain, and a small test patch can be done first so you see it dry before we carry on.

Can I get just a parapet or stack done?

Yes. Parapets and chimney stacks are exposed on every side and often need work years before the main walls. We can price them on their own, including the access needed to reach them safely.
