Pointing for new and old houses
Newer houses are not immune to worn pointing. A weak mix, a joint finished too early or a wall that takes driving rain can all leave mortar that crumbles long before you might expect.
Our brick repointing deals with that, from a patch under a gutter to a whole elevation. On older cottages built in lime, our lime and mortar pointing suits the softer brick better.
Garden walls and piers can be rebuilt through our bricklaying service. If you have spotted a crack over a window, our page on lintel repair in Telford is the place to start.

Estate brick and cottage brick
On Telford's new town estates, the pointing problems we see are usually patchy. Joints finished in a weak or over-sanded mix crumble on the most exposed wall, and the areas under leaking gutters or around overflow pipes wear first. Often only part of a house needs doing.
Older Ironbridge-era cottages are a different matter. Their soft brick and lime joints wear slowly and evenly over a very long time, and many have been patched with cement that is now damaging the brick. On these walls we cut out the cement with care and repoint in lime.
Is your pointing failing
- Mortar crumbling on one wall only
- Joints worn under a gutter or overflow
- Sandy joints on a newer house
- Brick faces flaking beside cement on a cottage
- Damp patches inside after rain
- Moss growing along the joints

Telford repointing questions
Why is the pointing failing on my fairly new house?
Usually because of the mix or the weather when it was laid. Mortar with too much sand, or joints that dried too fast or got frosted, can crumble early. Repointing in a good mix puts it right.
How much does repointing cost in Telford?
The front or rear of a standard terrace starts from £1,850 and the front or rear of a standard semi starts from £2,450. Gables, scaffold, chimneys and older cottages with cement to remove can take it above those starting prices, and detached houses are priced from photos.
Can you do just one wall?
Yes. If only the exposed gable or a patch under a dripping gutter has failed, we price that on its own. It is worth fixing the gutter first so the new pointing is not soaked again.
Should my cottage be repointed in lime?
If it was built in lime with soft brick, yes. We check the brick and the existing mortar before suggesting a mix.
Will the new pointing match the old?
We match the colour and finish as closely as possible. New mortar looks fresh at first and weathers in over time.
