Joints that let the weather in
A joint that has eroded behind the brick face makes a ledge for rain to sit on. Over the winter, that water freezes and works deeper, and the wall slowly loses its weather resistance.
Our brick repointing fills those joints again in a dense, well compacted mortar. On Victorian terraces we often suggest lime and mortar pointing for period houses, as lime suits the softer brick.
If any bricks have spalled, we replace them through brickwork repairs. For a cracked window head, see lintel repair in Wolverhampton.

Brick and mortar on Wolverhampton homes
Victorian terraces here were built with soft brick and lime mortar, and they have often been patched since with stronger cement. Where those hard patches meet the soft brick, the faces tend to spall. We remove the cement carefully and repoint in a softer mix, so the brick can dry out again.
Interwar semis were usually built with harder brick and cement mortar. The joints last well, but tall gables and chimney stacks catch the weather and wear faster. A repoint of those areas alone is often enough to keep the house sound.
Signs it is time to repoint
- Joints worn to a ledge behind the face
- Spalled brick next to a cement patch
- Gaps where mortar has fallen out
- Damp patch on a gable wall inside
- Mortar soft enough to scratch away
- Chimney stack joints open at the top

Wolverhampton repointing questions
How much does repointing cost in Wolverhampton?
For a Wolverhampton terrace one elevation starts from £1,850, while a semi front or rear begins at £2,450. Front and rear together starts from £3,700 for a terrace. Scaffold, chimney stacks, a lot of hard cement to remove or difficult access can raise the price.
Is lime pointing worth the extra on a Victorian terrace?
Lime is slower to lay and cure, so it does cost more, but on soft Victorian brick it protects the faces from spalling. We look at the brick and the existing mortar and only recommend lime where the wall genuinely needs it.
My chimney stack needs pointing. Is that included?
It can be added. Stacks often need doing before the walls below them, and we include any scaffold needed in the quote.
Will repointing make my house look different?
Done well, it should look like the original pointing, only fresh. We match the colour and profile so the house keeps its character.
How long should new pointing last?
A properly done repoint in the right mortar should last many years. Keeping gutters and downpipes clear helps it last longer.
