Repointing across Birmingham

A city with so many terraced streets, semis and estates has a lot of brick joints to look after. Whatever the age of your house, the mortar is the part that wears and needs renewing from time to time.

Our brick repointing work covers houses of every era. For Victorian brick laid in lime, we often recommend lime pointing for older homes, which lets the wall breathe and protects the brick faces.

Garden and boundary walls can be rebuilt by our bricklaying service. If you have a crack over a window, see lintel repair in Birmingham.

Different eras, different problems

Victorian terraced streets were built in soft brick and lime mortar. Many fronts have since been repointed in cement, and that hard skin leads to flaking brick. Rear walls and back extensions often wear even faster, as gutters and downpipes leak onto them.

Edwardian semis often have bays and decorative brick, while interwar estate houses have harder brick and cement mortar. On these, wear tends to be patchy: weathered gables, eroded chimney joints and old repairs in the wrong colour. We repoint the areas that need it.

Has the mortar had its day?

  • Mortar that crumbles when poked
  • Brick faces flaking on a terrace front
  • Chimney mortar falling onto the roof
  • Old patch repairs in a different colour
  • Damp spreading on an upstairs wall
  • Weeds rooted in the brickwork

Birmingham repointing questions

How much does repointing cost in Birmingham?

Prices start from £1,850 for a standard terraced front or rear and from £2,450 for a standard semi front or rear. Doing both the front and back of a terrace together is from £3,700. A chimney stack, bay windows, scaffold over a back extension or deep erosion can take it higher. Detached houses are priced from photos.

Can you repoint the back of a terrace with an outrigger?

Yes. Rear outriggers have lots of corners and lower roofs, so access needs planning. We include that in the quote after seeing photos.

What finish should my Victorian terrace have?

Many Victorian fronts had a flush or slightly recessed joint. We look at what survives on your house and on similar ones to match it.

Can repointing be done in winter?

It can, but not in frost or heavy rain. Lime in particular needs protecting. We plan around the weather and use covers.

Does the whole street need to match?

There is no rule, but matching the original look keeps your house in keeping with its neighbours. We will suggest a colour that suits.
