Keeping Stafford walls weathertight
Pointing is the thin line of mortar that keeps rain out of the body of the wall. When it erodes, water sits in the joints, frost opens them up and damp starts to show indoors.
For Victorian terraces with soft brick, lime pointing for older houses is usually kinder to the wall than a hard cement mix. Estate houses with harder brick suit our standard repointing service with a cement mortar matched in colour.
If a window head has cracked as well, see our page on lintel repair in Stafford. For a garden or boundary wall that needs more than pointing, we also do bricklaying.

Terraces and estates wear differently
On Victorian terraces the rear offshoot often fares worse than the front. It has more corners, a run of downpipes and a back wall that rarely gets attention, so joints wash out there first. We look at the back as closely as the street side.
Houses on later estates were built with cement mortar and harder brick, so their joints tend to last longer. When they do fail, it is usually in patches under gutters, round service boxes or at the gable. Patch repointing in a matched colour is often all they need.

- Joints you can rake out with a screwdriver
- Mortar lying loose on the sill
- Brick edges worn round at the joints
- Damp patch high on a bedroom wall
- Weeds in the joints of the offshoot
- Hard cement pointing cracking off older brick

Stafford repointing questions
What does repointing a Stafford terrace cost?
A standard terraced front or rear is from £1,850 and a semi-detached front or rear from £2,450. The price rises with scaffold for taller walls, a chimney stack, difficult access or joints that are hard to rake out.
Should a Victorian terrace have lime or cement pointing?
Soft Victorian brick usually wants lime, because it lets moisture out through the joint instead of the brick face. We check the brick and the original mortar before suggesting the mix.
Can you point the back offshoot on its own?
Yes. Rear offshoots often need doing long before the front because of the corners and downpipes they carry. We can price the offshoot on its own and match the colour to the main house.
Someone pointed my wall in hard cement and the bricks are flaking. What now?
The cement needs cutting out carefully so the brick edges are not chipped, then the wall is repointed in a softer mix. Badly spalled bricks can be replaced at the same time.
How soon can the wall get wet after pointing?
Fresh mortar needs protecting from heavy rain for the first few days. We cover the work with hessian or sheeting if the weather turns.
