Good joints keep a brick house dry

Every brick in your wall is bedded in mortar, and that mortar is what stops rain getting through the joints. When it has eroded, water gets into the wall and stays there.

Our brick repointing service replaces those joints with fresh mortar, coloured and finished to match. If your house is Victorian, read about our period property pointing, which uses lime to suit soft brick.

Terraces and semis, two different jobs

On Victorian terraces the joints were laid in lime and the bricks are often soft. Cement used in later repairs is harder than the brick, so it forces moisture out through the brick face instead of the joint, and the face spalls. On those walls we take the cement out carefully, by hand where needed, and repoint in lime.

Interwar semis normally have a cement mortar to begin with and harder brick to match. They tend to need repointing on the most exposed walls, such as a side gable or a chimney stack, before the sheltered front.

Time to repoint if you see these

  • Brick faces flaking beside hard joints
  • Lime joints worn deep and sandy
  • Stains spreading from a broken gutter
  • Cold, damp patches on an outside wall
  • Gaps around a chimney flashing
  • Bricks moving when you push them

The repointing job from start to end

  3. Rake and point

We clear each joint back to firm mortar, wet it and pack it in stages.

Repointing FAQs for Newcastle-under-Lyme

How much will repointing cost in Newcastle-under-Lyme?

A terraced house front or rear is from £1,850, and both together from £3,700. On a semi, each elevation is from £2,450. Scaffold, chimneys, height and the depth of the erosion all push a price up from there.

How can I tell if my terrace was built with lime?

Lime mortar is usually soft, pale and crumbly, and you can scratch it easily. If your house is Victorian and the original joints look like this, it was almost certainly laid in lime.

Will lime pointing last as long as cement?

On an old soft brick wall, yes, and it protects the brick far better. Lime is designed to be the sacrificial part of the wall, so it can be renewed without harming the brick.

Can you repoint while I am at work?

Yes. Almost all the work is outside, so you do not need to be in. We just need access to the walls and somewhere to mix.

Do you repoint the brickwork on extensions?

Yes. Kitchen and rear extensions are often in newer brick and may need a different mortar to the main house. We match each wall separately.
