Pointing for older brick buildings

Handmade bricks are softer and less even than modern ones, and the mortar that suits them is softer too. Older walls often have fine joints on the front and rougher ones on the sides and back, and a good repoint copies both.

For these buildings our lime pointing for period houses is usually the right choice. On later Victorian brick in good order, our brick repointing may be suitable instead.

Our pointing guide explains why lime matters on old walls. If you have a sagging window head, see our page on lintel repair in Knutsford.

Georgian and Victorian brick and cottages

Among Knutsford's older buildings, Georgian brick sits beside Victorian work and small cottages. Georgian fronts often have very fine joints between carefully made bricks, and a thick or smeared repoint spoils them. We rake these out with hand tools and repoint with a narrow, neat joint.

Cottages tend to have softer, more varied bricks and wider joints. Many were repointed in cement at some point, and the brick faces beside those joints are often the first to fail. Lime helps them dry out and stops further damage.

What we look for on older brick

  • Fine joints washed out on a front wall
  • Soft bricks flaking beside cement
  • Thick smeared pointing over brick faces
  • Damp on solid cottage walls
  • Lime joints crumbling to sand
  • Moss on north-facing walls

How we repoint older walls

  1. See the joints

Photos show the brick, joint width and current mortar.

  2. Hand rake out

Old mortar is taken out by hand to protect soft brick edges.

  3. Lime in thin layers

Joints are damped and filled in layers with a matched lime.

  4. Protect while curing

The wall is shaded and kept from frost while the lime sets.

Knutsford repointing questions

Can you match the fine joints on a Georgian front?

Yes. We rake out by hand and repoint with a narrow joint to match the original, keeping mortar off the brick faces.

Why are my cottage bricks crumbling?

Often hard cement pointing has trapped moisture in the brick, and frost has damaged the face. Removing the cement and repointing in lime usually stops it getting worse.

How much is lime repointing in Knutsford?

In lime, a standard terraced front or rear is from £2,312.50 and a semi-detached front or rear from £3,062.50. Fine Georgian joints, tall walls, scaffold and lots of hard cement to remove can add to those prices.

How long does lime need before it can get wet?

Lime needs to be kept from heavy rain and frost for a while as it sets, and it keeps hardening for weeks. We cover the wall and plan around the weather.

Can you match the colour of my old mortar?

We make sample mixes from different sands and compare them once dry. The closest match is used on the wall.
