Joints on hard red brick

Dense red brick sheds water well, so rain runs down the face and into the joints. On a wall like that the mortar does all the hard work, and once it wears, water gets in where it never used to.

Our brick repointing rakes out the worn joints and refills them in a mortar coloured to suit red brick. The brickwork pointing guide has more on how it is done.

Garden and boundary walls can be rebuilt through our bricklaying work, and cracks over windows are covered on our page for lintel repair in Wrexham.

Ruabon brick terraces

Many Wrexham terraces are built in local Ruabon brick, which is hard, smooth and a strong red. It rarely wears itself, so the joints take all the weather. Over time they recess, and the sharp edges of the bricks start to hold water against the mortar.

On a face this even, the mortar colour matters. A grey mix can look stark against red brick, so we choose a sand that gives a warmer colour to match the original. We also match the joint finish, so the repointed wall does not look patched.

When the joints are going

  • Joints recessed behind smooth red brick
  • Mortar washed out on a gable or stack
  • Damp inside on a front or back wall
  • Moss along the bottom courses
  • Gaps around window frames
  • Old grey patches that do not match

Wrexham repointing questions

How much does repointing cost in Wrexham?

Repointing the front or rear of a standard terrace starts from £1,850, while a standard semi front or rear starts from £2,450. Chimneys, scaffold, deep wear and grey patches that need cutting out push the cost up, and we confirm from photos.

Will the new mortar look grey against my red brick?

Not if the sand is right. We pick a warmer sand to sit well with red brick, and we can make up a small sample on the wall first so you can see it once it has dried.

Can just the back wall be repointed?

Yes. Back walls often wear differently from the front, especially where they face the prevailing weather or sit under an outshot roof. We can repoint them on their own.

How long will a good repoint last?

A well-made repoint in the right mix should last many years. How exposed the wall is, whether the gutters leak and the type of brick all make a difference, so keeping rainwater goods in order helps it last.

Can you remove old mismatched patches?

Yes. We cut out the old grey patches, taking care not to chip the hard brick edges, then repoint the whole area in one mix so the colour runs evenly across the wall.
