Red brick, sandstone and the right mortar

Victorian houses that mix red brick with sandstone need pointing that is gentle on both. Stone around windows and on corners is often softer than the brick, so a hard mortar can wear it away faster than the weather would.

We use lime and mortar pointing on older walls like these and standard brick repointing where the brick and existing mortar suit it. Before we start, we check what is in the wall now.

Where bricks have spalled, we cut them out and fit matching ones with our brickwork repairs service. Cracks over windows are dealt with on our page for lintel repair in Birkenhead.

Pointing Victorian houses with sandstone details

Birkenhead has many Victorian terraces and large townhouses in red brick and sandstone. On these, the sandstone heads, sills and quoins usually show wear first, especially where hard cement pointing traps water in the stone. We take that out and repoint the joints around the stone in lime.

Larger townhouses have tall walls, high chimneys and often a basement or raised ground floor. The upper joints are rarely looked at and can be badly worn, so we quote for the full height from scaffold and include the chimney if it needs it.

What we look for on brick and sandstone

  • Sandstone crumbling around hard joints
  • Red brick faces spalling in frost
  • Worn joints high on tall walls
  • Damp in a basement or lower room
  • Chimney mortar washed out
  • Cement smeared over stone dressings

How a period repoint is carried out

  1. Check the materials

Photos show us the brick, stone and current mortar.

  2. Remove hard pointing

Cement is cut out by hand around soft stone and brick edges.

  3. Lime in layers

Joints are damped and filled in thin lifts, then left to firm up.

  4. Cure with care

The wall is protected from frost, rain and drying wind while it sets.

Birkenhead repointing questions

Does sandstone need a special mortar?

Yes. Sandstone is soft and needs a lime mortar that is weaker than the stone, so moisture leaves through the joint. A hard cement mix can cause the stone to crumble.

Can you repoint a tall townhouse?

Yes, from scaffold. Tall walls and high stacks are often the most worn parts, and we include access for the full height in the quote.

What is the cost of repointing in Birkenhead?

A standard terraced front or rear is from £1,850 and a standard semi-detached front or rear from £2,450. Large townhouses, stonework, chimney stacks and scaffold on several floors are priced from photos.

Can you match the colour of my old lime mortar?

We look at the sand and lime in the existing joints and mix samples to compare once dry. The aim is for the new pointing to sit quietly with the old.

Is it better to repoint before painting window surrounds?

Yes. Repointing first lets the wall dry out and avoids mortar marks on fresh paint. Give the new joints time to cure before decorating.
