Failing heads on red brick terraces
Red brick terraces are built to last, but the beam over each window is a weak point. When it fails, the hard red brick above does not bend. It cracks along the joints instead, in a clear stepped line.
Through our lintel replacement work, we support the wall, remove the failed head and fit a new lintel with good bearings. Any bricks that have cracked around the opening are replaced through our brickwork repairs.
If the rest of the front needs pointing, see our page for repointing in Wrexham. The guide to lintel repair explains every step.

Ruabon brick and terrace heads
Many Wrexham terraces are built in local Ruabon brick, a dense, hard red brick with a strong colour. It is long-lasting, but when bricks around a lintel crack, finding a close match matters, because a near miss stands out on such an even face. We look for reclaimed bricks that match the colour and size.
These terraces often have brick arches or soldier courses over their windows, with timber or early steel behind. When the hidden beam fails, the arch or course dips. We rebuild it in matching brick once the new lintel is in, so the front still looks right.
What a failing lintel looks like
- Stepped crack through hard red brick
- Arch or soldier course dipping
- Rust staining on the brick face
- Cracked bricks either side of the head
- Window starting to stick
- Gap between frame and brickwork

Wrexham lintel questions
Can you match Ruabon brick?
We look for reclaimed bricks of the same colour and size, and where the original bricks are sound, we reuse them. A clear picture of your front lets us judge how close a match is likely.
How much is a new lintel in Wrexham?
A lintel of 1 to 1.5 metres is £1,850 and one over 2 up to 2.5 metres is £2,450. The highest band, over 3.5 up to 4 metres, is £3,450. Rebuilding an arch, scaffold for upper floors and sourcing matching brick can take it higher, which we confirm from photos. All bands include the inside and outside lintel. If only one side needs replacing, it is half, which means £925 for the shortest and £1,225 for over 2 up to 2.5 metres.
Why has the crack gone through the bricks, not just the mortar?
Hard brick can crack when the load moves suddenly or the mortar is as strong as the brick. Cracked bricks are replaced as part of the job.
Can you do the lintel over the back kitchen door?
Yes. Back door heads on terraces fail in the same way as the front windows, often with a concrete or timber lintel behind a plain brick course. Pricing it with any front window work saves setting up twice.
Do I need building regulations approval?
Taking out a lintel that carries the wall can need building regulations approval. Your local building control will say what applies, and it is best to ask them before the props go in.
