Repointing that suits the house
Not every wall needs the same mortar. A Victorian terrace built in soft brick and lime wants a different mix from an interwar semi in harder, machine-made brick, and getting that right is what makes a repoint last.
Our brick repointing covers both. For older walls laid in lime, we may suggest lime pointing for older houses so the brickwork can still breathe.
Damaged bricks are replaced as part of our brickwork repairs, and cracks over windows are handled under lintel repair in Hull.

Two kinds of house, two kinds of wear
On Hull's Victorian brick terraces the lime joints wear slowly and evenly, until whole elevations are sandy and recessed. The bricks are soft, so any hard cement repair stands out within a few winters as a ring of spalled faces around it, and those bricks then need replacing too.
Interwar estates tend to wear in patches. Bay fronts, chimney stacks and the walls under leaky gutters often need doing years before the sheltered sides. Many of these houses also have a pebbledash or render band, and the brick below it can need repointing while the rest is still sound.
Signs your house needs repointing
- Mortar falling out when it rains
- Deep gaps between the bricks
- Damp marks on a bay or chimney breast inside
- Moss filling the joints near the ground
- Bricks around a downpipe stained and flaking
- Draughts around window frames

Repointing questions from Hull homeowners
How much does it cost to repoint a semi in Hull?
The front or rear of a standard semi-detached house is from £2,450 and a standard terraced front or rear from £1,850. Bays, chimneys, scaffold and joints that have worn deeper than usual push the price up, and detached houses are priced from photos.
Can you repoint just the bay window?
Yes. Bays catch a lot of weather and often wear before the flat wall. We can repoint a bay on its own and match the finish to the rest of the front.
Should I repoint before selling my house?
If a survey has flagged the pointing, getting it done can remove a sticking point with buyers. Send us the survey comment and a photo and we will quote for what it describes.
Do you repoint chimney stacks?
Yes. Stacks take the weather from every side and often fail first. They need safe access, which we include in the quote.
What if my wall has old cement patches?
We cut them out with care so the brick edges are not damaged, then repoint the whole area in one mix so it looks even.
