When the mortar wears out before the brick

Good bricks can outlast the mortar between them several times over. In Doncaster that is the usual story on brick terraces, interwar semis and the houses built for former pit villages. The joints dry out, crack and fall back, and the wall starts letting rain in.

A brick repoint deals with that by removing the loose mortar and filling each joint solidly again. Where a crack runs up from a window corner instead, it is often a lintel issue, which we cover on our page about lintel repair in Doncaster.

Garden and boundary walls lose their pointing too, and some lean or need rebuilding, which comes under our bricklaying work. To see the stages of a repoint before you get in touch, open the brickwork pointing guide.

Terraces, semis and pit-village homes

Pit-village housing was usually built quickly and plainly, in long rows with shared walls and simple joint finishes. Many have been patch-pointed over the years in mixes that do not match, leaving a wall of different colours and hardnesses. A full elevation repoint brings the joints back to one even finish.

Interwar semis in Doncaster often have render or pebbledash on part of the wall and brick below. The brick plinth and the bay are where mortar tends to fail first, as splashback from paths and drives keeps them wet. We check those low courses closely when we price.

Has your wall reached the point of repointing

  • Joints you can dig out with a fingernail
  • Patchy old repairs in mismatched colours
  • Brick plinth crumbling near ground level
  • Damp marks below windows inside
  • Lichen or moss holding water in the joints
  • Mortar fallen out under a dripping gutter

Our repointing steps

  1. Send a quick photo

Show us the wall from a few steps back and one close shot of the joints.

  2. Receive a fixed quote

We price from the pictures, or come out if we need to check something.

  3. Clear the joints

Weak mortar is raked to a sound depth and the dust is blown out before filling.

  4. Point and finish

New mortar goes in firm, is tooled to the house profile and the bricks are brushed off.

Doncaster repointing answers

How much is repointing in Doncaster?

A standard terraced house front or rear is from £1,850 and a semi-detached front or rear is from £2,450 for the elevation. Extra height, a chimney stack, scaffold over a conservatory or very deep failed joints raise the figure. Detached houses are priced from photos. If both the front and back are done at once, a terrace starts from £3,700 and a semi from £4,900.

Can you get rid of the patchwork of old repairs on my wall?

Yes. Repointing the whole elevation in one mix and one finish removes the patchy look. We test the mortar colour first so it sits well with your brick.

Do you repoint garden walls?

We do. Garden walls are exposed on both faces and the top, so they often need it before the house does. If the coping is loose or the wall leans, we tell you whether it should be rebuilt instead.

Is it worth repointing a rented house?

For a landlord, failed joints usually lead to damp complaints and frost-damaged bricks later. Repointing the worst elevation first can be a sensible way to spread the work. We can price each wall separately.

Does someone need to stay in while the wall is done?

Not for most of the job, as it all happens outside. We need access to the walls and somewhere to mix, and we will tell you before we start what we need from you.
