Repointing Wakefield's older walls

Wakefield's brick and stone terraces and its Georgian buildings were built in lime, with thin joints on the finer fronts. Many have since been patched in cement. Getting the mortar right is what decides whether a repoint helps the wall or slowly harms it.

We use lime repointing on the older brick and stone, and standard brick repointing on later walls. Either way, the mix stays weaker than the masonry so the joint takes the wear.

Our pointing guide explains the process, and cracks over windows are dealt with on our page for lintel repair in Wakefield.

Georgian fronts and older terraces

Georgian brick fronts often have very fine joints, sometimes with a narrow ruled line. Raking these with a grinder widens the joint and spoils the look. We work them by hand and use a fine lime mortar to keep the original appearance.

Brick and stone terraces in Wakefield are more forgiving, but many have been repointed in hard cement that is now cracking away. Removing it and repointing in lime gives the brick or stone a way to dry and stops the faces from blowing.

Joints that need repointing

  • Fine Georgian joints eroded or missing
  • Hard cement cracking away from soft brick
  • Brick faces blown beside cement joints
  • Damp creeping up inside walls
  • Stone faces wearing back around joints
  • Loose mortar on chimney stacks

How we repoint

  1. Photos to start

Send a wide shot and a close-up of the joints so we can see the type and width.

  2. Mix and method agreed

We say how the joints will be raked and which mortar suits, then quote.

  3. Careful raking

Fine joints are hand raked and cement removed without damaging the brick edges.

  4. Point and cure

Lime is laid in thin lifts, finished to match and protected while it hardens.

Wakefield repointing questions

How much does repointing cost in Wakefield?

Repointing a standard terrace elevation, front or rear, begins at £1,850 and a semi-detached elevation begins at £2,450 for the same work. Georgian fronts with fine joints, extra storeys, stacks, scaffold and walls with cement to remove cost more. Detached houses are priced from photos. Lime, which suits the Georgian and older walls, is a quarter more. A terraced front or rear in lime starts from £2,312.50 and a semi front and rear together from £6,125.

Can you match a fine Georgian joint?

Yes. We hand rake the joints and use a fine lime mix so the finished joints keep the thin, neat look of the original.

My kitchen extension is newer brick than the house. Can the pointing match?

We can point the extension in a mix that suits its harder brick while choosing a sand that gives a similar colour to the lime on the main house. The two then read as one wall from a distance.

Why have my bricks blown next to the cement joints?

Hard cement stops water leaving through the joints, so it leaves through the brick instead. Frost then pushes the face off. Repointing in lime helps prevent it happening again.

Can you replace the blown bricks too?

Yes. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced with matching ones at the same time as the repoint.
