Looking after sandstone joints

Sandstone is the material that defines much of Huddersfield's older building stock, from terraces to villas to mill buildings. It is durable but porous. How long it lasts depends heavily on the mortar it is pointed in.

Our lime pointing service is the usual choice here, using a mix that is softer and more open than the stone. Brick walls on later houses or extensions get a brick repointing in a suitable mix.

If you want to understand the process first, read the brickwork pointing guide. Cracking over openings is covered on our page for lintel repair in Huddersfield.

Terraces, villas and mill walls

Villas often have ashlar, finely cut stone with very thin joints. Repointing these needs a fine mortar and a light touch, as a wide or smeared joint spoils the look. We rake them by hand and keep the new mortar inside the joint.

Terraces and mill buildings usually have coursed or rubble walling with wider joints. Those tend to have been patched in cement over the years, which holds water against the stone. Taking that cement out and repointing in lime lets the wall shed water through the joints again.

When sandstone joints need attention

  • Fine ashlar joints opening up
  • Cement patches with stone wearing around them
  • Joints raked back by weather to a deep gap
  • Damp walls inside a stone villa
  • Weeds in the joints of a mill wall
  • Sand gathering at the foot of the wall

Our approach to stone repointing

  1. Share some photos

Send close-ups of the joints so we can see if the stone is ashlar or rubble.

  2. Get a clear price

We set out the mix and method and send the quote in writing.

  3. Hand rake the joints

Fine joints are raked by hand and cement removed without marking the stone.

  4. Point to the stone

Lime is finished to suit the walling and protected while it hardens.

Huddersfield repointing questions

How much is repointing in Huddersfield?

From £1,850 for a standard terraced front or rear, and from £2,450 for a semi-detached front or rear. Villas with fine ashlar joints, gables, chimney stacks, extra height or a lot of cement to cut out cost more, and detached houses are priced from photos. Sandstone repointed in lime starts from £2,312.50 for one side of a terrace, and a semi done front and back in lime starts from £6,125.

Can you repoint ashlar without making the joints wider?

Yes. Fine joints are raked by hand rather than with a grinder, so the stone edges stay sharp and the joint keeps its width.

Should cement pointing on my sandstone be removed?

If the stone around it is wearing or flaking, yes. If the cement is sound and the stone is fine, leaving it can be the better option. A photo helps us judge.

Do you work on mill buildings converted to homes?

We do. Walls on these buildings are often tall, so access is a big part of the price. Send us photos and we will tell you what we think is needed.

Will lime pointing look different from my neighbour's cement?

It will be softer in tone and texture, which usually suits sandstone better. We can take it neatly to the line between properties.
