Keeping weather out of valley-side walls

Halifax houses on the valley sides take rain on the wind, and the higher and more open the wall, the harder it is hit. Stone itself sheds water well. It is the joints that let it in once the mortar has washed out or cracked.

We repoint most of these walls with lime mortar pointing so the stone can dry out between storms. Brick additions and newer walls are dealt with by our standard brick repointing service.

Retaining walls and garden walls on a slope can be rebuilt through our bricklaying work. If a window head is cracking, the page on lintel repair in Halifax explains what we do.

Pointing on steep, exposed stone terraces

Terraces stepping up a valley side each have a short section of exposed gable where one roof meets the next. Those steps, and the end gables of each row, catch rain sideways and are often the first walls to show damp inside. We give them priority when pricing a partial repoint.

Back-to-backs and houses built into the slope have walls that cannot dry from both sides. Hard cement pointing on these walls traps water, and inside you see damp and flaking plaster. Lime pointing gives the moisture a way out through the joints.

Signs the joints are letting rain in

  • Damp patches after windy rain
  • Washed-out joints on the gable end
  • Stone faces crumbling beside hard joints
  • Plaster flaking on the inner face
  • Moss thick in joints on a shaded wall
  • Mortar loose where roofs step down the hill

How we repoint stone walls

  1. Send photos of the wall

Include the gables and any stepped sections so we can see the exposed parts.

  2. Agree the scope

We say which walls need it most and give a written price for each.

  3. Rake out with care

Old mortar and cement come out without damaging the edges of the stone.

  4. Lime and protect

Joints are filled in lifts, finished to suit the stone and covered from the weather.

Halifax repointing questions

What does a stone repoint cost in Halifax?

Our starting point is £1,850 for a standard terraced front or rear and £2,450 for a semi-detached front or rear. Gable ends, tall walls on a slope, chimneys, scaffold on steep ground and stone with hard cement to cut out all raise it. Detached houses are priced from photos. Front and rear together runs from £3,700 for a terrace in a standard mix, or from £4,625 if the whole job is in lime.

Which wall should I repoint first?

Usually the one facing the weather, or the gable end. Those walls let the most water in. We can price them separately so you can do the worst first.

Can lime cope with heavy rain on an exposed wall?

Yes, if it is protected while it cures. Once hardened it sheds rain well and lets the wall dry out, which matters on exposed stone.

My house is built into the hill. Will repointing stop the damp?

It helps on the walls above ground. Walls holding back earth can also be damp from the ground side, which pointing will not fix. We tell you what we think is causing it.

Do you repoint chimney stacks on stone houses?

Yes. Stacks on exposed hillsides take a battering and often need the top courses rebedding too. Scaffold is included in the quote.
