What a cracked head is telling you

The weight of a wall above a window has to go somewhere. A healthy lintel takes it out to the stone either side, but a cracked or decayed one lets it press down on the frame and the joints. The crack you see on the outside is that load finding a new route.

Our lintel replacement service puts a proper route back. The walling is supported, the failed head is taken out or backed up, and a new lintel is bedded to carry the load out to sound stone.

The stonework is then rebuilt and pointed to suit, and you can read more about this in our guide to lintels. If the house also needs repointing, see repointing in Huddersfield.

Terraces, villas and mill buildings

Sandstone villas in Huddersfield often have large windows with carved or moulded heads. These are worth keeping. Where the stone face is sound, a concealed lintel behind it can take the load so the detail on the front stays untouched.

Terraces and mill buildings tend to have plainer heads but more of them, and mill buildings have wide openings where old iron may have been used. Iron rusts and swells inside the stone, splitting it from within. Openings like these are priced after a visit.

Signs a head has failed

  • Carved stone head cracked at one end
  • Crack spreading up from the head into the wall
  • Rust bleeding from inside a stone head
  • Window frame bowed at the top
  • Inside reveal plaster cracking
  • Stones above the head shifting outwards

How we replace a lintel

  1. Look at photos

Send the opening, the crack and any carved detail so we can plan around it.

  2. Prop and protect

The wall is supported and any decorative stone is protected before work starts.

  3. New lintel behind or in place

A concealed lintel backs the old face or a new head replaces a failed one.

  4. Rebuild and finish

Walling is relaid, joints pointed to suit the stone and props removed.

Huddersfield lintel questions

What does lintel replacement cost in Huddersfield?

The price follows the length, from £1,850 for a 1 to 1.5 metre lintel up to £3,450 for over 3.5 up to 4 metres. Protecting carved stone, wide mill-type openings, scaffold for upstairs windows or a lot of walling to rebuild can take it above the band. Both the outer and inner lintel are in those bands, and doing just one side is half price, from £925 to £1,725 by length.

Can you save a carved stone window head?

Often yes. If it is still in one piece, a lintel behind it takes the weight and the carved face stays where it is.

How do I know if there is iron in my stone head?

Rust staining or a crack that seems to come from inside the stone are good clues. We can confirm once the stone around it is opened.

Does a villa bay need the same work as a flat window?

A bay has more than one head and corner posts, so it is more involved. We prop each face and replace or support each head as needed.

Can the work be done in winter?

Yes, though the mortar needs protecting from frost while it sets. We cover the work and leave the props in until it is ready.
