Pointing that suits brick and stone
Around Chesterfield you find two kinds of wall side by side: red brick terraces and older cottages built in stone. Both depend on their mortar joints to shed rain, and both suffer once those joints go soft or fall out.
For brick houses our brick repointing service rakes out the tired mortar and fills the joints again in a colour picked to sit with your brick. Stone cottages normally want a softer mix, so we use lime pointing for older properties on those walls.
If you also have a cracked window head, see our page on lintel repair in Chesterfield. You can read how a repoint is done, step by step, in the pointing guide before you get in touch.

Why stone cottages and terraces wear differently
Stone cottages on the edge of the Peak District were usually laid in lime, often with wide, uneven joints. When those joints are later filled with hard cement, water gets trapped behind it and escapes through the stone instead, so the stone face crumbles while the cement stays put. We take that cement out carefully and repoint in lime so the wall can dry out again.
The brick terraces tend to fail in more predictable places: chimney stacks, rear walls behind downpipes, and the joints under window sills. Where the brick is sound, a straightforward rake out and repoint is normally all that is needed, and we only price the walls that need it.
What failing pointing looks like
- Sandy mortar falling from stone joints
- Stone faces crumbling beside cement pointing
- Brick joints recessed behind the face
- Damp showing on a gable wall inside
- Moss and weeds rooted in the joints
- Chimney stack mortar washed out

Questions about repointing in Chesterfield
What does repointing cost in Chesterfield?
A standard terraced house front or rear starts from £1,850 and a semi-detached front or rear from £2,450. Lime pointing costs a little more, from £2,312.50 for a terraced front or rear. Extra height, scaffolding, chimneys and badly eroded joints add to that, and detached houses are priced from photos.
My stone cottage has cement pointing. Should it come out?
If the stone next to the cement is flaking or the walls feel damp, it is usually doing harm. We cut it out by hand where the stone is soft and repoint in lime so moisture can escape through the joints.
Can lime be used in winter?
Lime has to be kept away from frost while it sets, so we avoid the coldest spells for lime work. In cooler months we cover the wall with hessian and plan the job around the forecast.
Will new mortar match my old stone joints?
We get close by choosing the sand and mix to suit what is already there. New mortar always looks a little brighter at first and tones down as it weathers.
Can you repoint a garden wall as well as the house?
Yes. Garden and boundary walls lose their joints too, often faster because they get wet on both sides. We can add them to the same quote.
