Repointing that respects the brick

The joints in a brick wall are meant to wear out before the bricks do. When they reach that point, the wall needs repointing before water starts working into the brick itself.

Our repointing work takes out the failed mortar and replaces it with a mix chosen for your brick. On Victorian houses and older buildings with soft brick we normally recommend lime and mortar pointing for period homes.

Garden and boundary walls can be repointed or rebuilt through our bricklaying service. For cracks above a window, have a look at lintel repair in Derby.

Where Derby brickwork tends to fail

Victorian terraces and older buildings near the city centre were built with lime and soft brick. Their joints wear back slowly over many years, and the most common damage comes from later cement repairs that are harder than the brick around them. We remove those patches before they do more harm.

Interwar semis usually have a harder brick and a cement mortar, so they stand up better overall. When they do fail it is usually in patches: a chimney, a gable, the area around a leaking downpipe or a porch roof where water runs down the wall.

Warning signs in your brickwork

  • Joints that crumble when you press them
  • Old cement patches cracking away
  • Brick faces blown around hard joints
  • Damp corners inside the house
  • Green staining under a leaking downpipe
  • Loose bricks on a chimney or parapet

Derby repointing questions

What is the cost of repointing in Derby?

Prices start from £1,850 for a standard terraced front or rear and from £2,450 for a semi-detached front or rear. Tall walls, scaffold, chimneys or joints that are badly eroded will move a job above that. If your house needs lime, a terraced front or rear is from £2,312.50.

Should I repoint before selling my house?

Failing pointing is something a buyer's surveyor often notes, and it can lead to questions or a lower offer. Repointing the worst walls before you sell can help, and we can price only those.

Will the new mortar be the same colour as my old joints?

We choose the sand and mix to get as close as we can. Fresh mortar always looks lighter for a while, then weathers in over the following months.

My landlord asked for a quote. Can you send it to them?

Yes. We can send the written quote to you, your landlord or the letting agent, whoever is arranging the work.

Is it worth repointing a house with older city centre brick?

Yes, if the joints have failed. On older buildings, lime is usually the right mortar, and keeping the joints sound protects the brick from frost and damp.
