Keeping red brick walls sound

Red brick walls look their best with neat, even joints, and they last longest when those joints are kept in good order. Once the mortar sinks back or falls out, rain gets in and the brick edges start to suffer.

We repoint with a mortar picked to suit the brick, through our brick repointing service. For walls that are also cracked over a window, see lintel repair in Leicester.

Boundary walls and piers in front gardens are often in worse shape than the house, and our bricklaying covers rebuilding them. The brickwork pointing guide sets out how the whole repointing process works.

Repointing Leicester terraces and semis

Victorian red brick terraces were laid in a lime mortar that is softer than the brick. That is fine while it lasts, but the joints wear back over time, and many fronts now carry a mix of original lime and later cement repairs. A full repoint in a matching lime mix brings them back to one even finish.

Interwar semis usually have harder brick and a different joint style, often with a darker mortar. The walls most at risk are the side gable and the brickwork around the bay windows, where water runs off the bay roof and down the face.

Signs the joints have gone

  • Mortar sunk well back from red brick edges
  • Brick arrises rounded or chipped
  • Mixed patches of grey and buff mortar
  • Damp patches under a bay window
  • Sandy dust collecting on sills
  • Ivy or weeds in the joints

Repointing, step by step

  1. Send pictures

Photos of each wall, plus a close-up of a joint, are usually enough to price the job.

  2. Confirm the quote

We set out the walls, the mortar and the access in a written quote.

  3. Prepare the joints

Old mortar is raked back to sound, then the joints are dampened.

  4. Point and brush

Mortar goes in in layers, is struck to the right profile and brushed off.

Leicester repointing FAQs

How much does it cost to repoint a Leicester terrace?

The front or rear of a standard terraced house is from £1,850. For a semi-detached house, each front or rear is from £2,450. Chimneys, scaffold, extra height and very worn joints mean a higher price. Lime on a semi-detached front or rear starts at £3,062.50.

Do I need permission to repoint my house?

Like-for-like repointing on an ordinary house does not usually need permission. If your house is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council before work starts.

Can you clean the brick as well?

We brush off the wall as part of the repoint. Heavy staining or old paint is a separate question, so show it to us in a photo first.

Will repointing stop damp in my front room?

If the damp comes from rain soaking through failed joints, repointing should help a great deal. Damp can also come from gutters, sills or the ground, so we check those while we look.

Can you repoint the brickwork under my bay window?

Yes. The brickwork below and beside a bay often gets soaked by water off the bay roof. We repoint it and look at whether the flashing above needs attention.
