Making worn walls weather-tight again

Brick walls do not need much, but they do need sound joints. Once the mortar starts falling out, the wall soaks up rain, and damp and frost damage follow.

Our brick repointing rakes out the tired mortar and fills the joints again in a mix that suits your house. Older terraces with lime mortar can be repointed through our lime pointing service.

Cracks above windows are a separate fault covered under lintel repair in Mansfield. If a wall at the front or back of the garden has started to lean, our bricklaying service can rebuild it.

Repointing coalfield terraces and estate homes

Terraces built in the coalfield era were laid in lime, and their rear walls, outriggers and chimneys have often been patched over the years in whatever mortar was to hand. That leaves a wall where some joints are hard cement and others are crumbling lime. We remove the patchwork and repoint in one suitable mix.

Interwar estate houses are usually in harder brick with cement mortar. They wear more evenly, but the gable ends, chimneys and the walls behind downpipes still go first, and a repoint of just those areas is often all that is needed.

Has your pointing failed?

  • Crumbling joints on a rear outrigger
  • Patchwork of hard and soft mortar
  • Chimney mortar eroded or missing
  • Damp patches on a back bedroom wall
  • Joints that rattle out when brushed
  • Plants sprouting from the brickwork

Mansfield repointing questions

What does a Mansfield repoint cost?

Standard terraced fronts and rears are from £1,850, and semi-detached fronts and rears are from £2,450. A job costs more when it needs scaffold, includes a chimney, is taller than usual or has very deep erosion. Both the front and rear of a terrace together come to £3,700 as a starting price.

Can you repoint the back of my terrace only?

Yes. Rear walls and outriggers often take more weather and get less attention, so they wear first. We price each wall separately.

What if my chimney is leaning?

A leaning stack may need taking down and rebuilding rather than repointing. A picture of the stack from the street is enough for a first opinion.

Is repointing messy?

Raking out mortar makes dust, so we close windows nearby and sheet the ground where needed. We clear up at the end of the job.

My neighbours share the chimney. How does that work?

Shared stacks are common on terraces. If both sides need doing, it usually makes sense to do the stack in one go and agree the cost between you.
