Sound joints for Rotherham brick terraces

The brick terraces built around Rotherham's steel and coal industries have stood for a long time, but their mortar was never meant to last forever. Joints that have washed out let water stand in the wall. Over a few winters that turns into damp inside and flaking brick faces outside.

We put that right with repointing, raking out the soft joints and refilling them solidly. On older terraces built in soft brick with lime, lime pointing is often the right call because it lets the wall dry.

Bricks that have already blown can be cut out and replaced through brickwork repairs. If you have a crack over a window as well, read about lintel repair in Rotherham.

How industrial-era terraces wear

Terraces from this era often carried years of soot and smoke on their walls, and later cleaning or cement repairs did not always help the brick. Where the face of the brick has hardened or been patched in cement, water gets trapped behind it. We look at the brick condition before choosing the mix.

Rear walls and back extensions on these terraces often get less attention than the front, yet they face yards where water collects and drains are close by. The lower courses at the back are frequently in a worse state than anything on the street side, so we include them when we look.

Telling signs in your brickwork

  • Joints recessed deep behind the brick face
  • Mortar that turns to powder when scratched
  • Brick faces flaking off after frost
  • Cold, damp patches on inside walls
  • Green staining around leaking downpipes
  • Old cement patches pulling away

How we repoint a terrace

  1. Photos first

Front, back and a close-up of the worst joints helps us price accurately.

  2. Mortar and price agreed

We explain the mix we would use and send a written quote.

  3. Rake and fill

Old mortar comes out to a solid depth, then new mortar is packed in layers.

  4. Strike and brush

Joints are finished to match the terrace and loose mortar is brushed away.

Questions about Rotherham repointing

What does repointing cost for a Rotherham terrace?

Pricing for a standard terraced front starts from £1,850 and the same applies to the rear. Semi-detached houses start from £2,450 per elevation. A chimney stack, a three-storey wall, awkward yard access or a lot of cement to remove will move it above that. Booking the front and rear together starts from £3,700 on a terrace and £4,900 on a semi. Where lime suits soft older brick, a terraced elevation in lime starts from £2,312.50.

Will repointing lighten the look of my house?

Fresh mortar can look brighter at first, but we choose a sand and mix that sits close to the original. It tones down as it weathers, and we can test a small patch first.

My back yard is narrow. Can you still do the rear wall?

Usually yes. A narrow yard may need a tower or a smaller scaffold, which we plan for when we price. Photos of the yard help us work out the access.

Can bricks that have flaked be saved?

Mildly worn bricks can stay. Deeply flaked or blown ones are better replaced, and sometimes a brick can be turned round if the back face is sound.

How soon can I paint or clean the wall after pointing?

We advise leaving new mortar alone while it cures. Cement needs a few weeks and lime longer. Avoid pressure washing the wall in that time.
