Keeping terrace walls dry

A solid brick wall has no cavity to stop water, so the mortar joints are its first line of defence. When they erode, rain soaks straight through the brick and shows up inside as damp, flaking paint or blown plaster.

Our repointing service rakes out the failed joints and refills them in a mix weaker than the brick, so any future movement or salt damage is taken by the mortar. For Victorian walls still laid in lime, lime repointing is often the kinder option.

Bricks that have already spalled can be cut out and replaced through our brick repair service. If a window head is also cracking, our page on lintel repair in Grimsby explains what can be done.

Victorian brick near the coast

Grimsby's Victorian brick terraces were mostly built with soft, fairly porous bricks laid in lime. Near the coast those walls take in a lot of damp air, and when they dry out the moisture carries salts to the surface that break down both the joints and the brick faces.

Many of these terraces have been patched over the years with a hard cement pointing. That kind of repair holds water against the softer brick, and frost then pops the face off. Where we find it, we remove it with care and repoint in a softer mix so the wall can dry again.

What tired pointing looks like

  • Sandy mortar trickling out of the joints
  • Old cement pointing standing proud of eroded brick
  • Brick faces spalling in a patch
  • Damp or blown plaster on a front wall
  • Joints open around the rainwater downpipe
  • Small plants growing out of the brickwork

How we repoint your wall

  1. Start with pictures

Send a wide photo and a close-up so we can see the state of the joints.

  2. Fixed written quote

We price from the photos or visit if anything needs checking in person.

  3. Rake and refill

Joints are cut back to firm mortar, damped and packed in layers.

  4. Final finish

Each joint is struck to the house profile and the brick is brushed clean.

Common questions about repointing

How much does repointing a terrace in Grimsby cost?

A standard terraced front or rear starts from £1,850 and a standard semi-detached front or rear from £2,450. Three-storey walls, chimney stacks, scaffold and hard cement that needs careful cutting out can all put the price above that, and we confirm it once we have photos.

Why is my brick crumbling next to newer pointing?

Usually because that pointing is harder than the brick. Water collects in the brick instead of drying through the joints, and frost breaks the face away. Replacing the mortar with a softer mix stops the damage spreading.

Will repointing cure damp inside my front room?

If the damp comes from rain soaking through open joints, repointing should help a great deal. Damp can also come from gutters, downpipes or ground levels, so we look at those too and tell you what we see.

Can the rear of a terrace be done without going through the house?

Often yes, if there is access down a back passage or through a yard. If the only way to the back is through the house, we protect the floors and keep the mess outside.

Can you match the colour of the original mortar?

We pick a sand and binder to get close to the existing joints and can do a small test panel first. New mortar always looks a little brighter at first and softens as it weathers.
