Repointing older brick

Old soft brick lasts for centuries if it can breathe. The joints between the bricks are designed to be the weak part, wearing away slowly and taking the moisture with them.

For houses of that age we usually recommend lime pointing, raked out by hand and filled in thin layers. Newer walls and extensions can be done as standard brick repointing.

Bricks lost to frost or hard cement can be cut out and matched through our brick repairs. Window heads are covered on our page for lintel repair in York, and the pointing guide explains the process.

Georgian and Victorian walls

Georgian brick terraces often have very fine joints, sometimes with a ribbon or tuck finish. These need a careful hand and a fine sand. A coarse modern mortar smeared over them can spoil the look of a front that has lasted for a very long time.

Victorian terraces and historic buildings were mostly built in lime, and many have been patched with cement. Cement removal is slow work because the brick arrises must survive. We take our time on this, as it is the part that decides how the finished wall looks.

When old brick needs pointing

  • Lime joints washed out on the weather side
  • Brick faces spalling next to cement patches
  • Fine joints opened up and gappy
  • Damp marks inside on an outside wall
  • Plants in the joints near gutters
  • Crumbling mortar around a chimney

How we repoint older walls

  1. Photos first

Pictures of the wall and joints tell us the age and the mortar.

  2. Choose and quote

We match the sand and lime and give you a written price.

  3. Hand rake and fill

Joints are cleared by hand where needed and filled in thin layers.

  4. Finish and protect

The finish is matched and the wall covered while the lime cures.

Repointing questions in York

How much does repointing cost in York?

Prices start at £1,850 for the front or rear of a standard terraced house and at £2,450 for the front or rear of a standard semi. Fine joint finishes, a lot of cement to remove, tall walls with scaffold and chimneys all add to that, and we confirm from photos. In lime, those starting prices become £2,312.50 for a terraced elevation and £3,062.50 for a semi-detached one.

Can you match tuck or ribbon pointing?

Possibly. Tuck and ribbon finishes need a fine sand and a steady hand, so a close photo of your joints is the best way for us to say whether we can match them.

Is my house too old for cement pointing?

If it was built in lime, yes. Cement is harder than the brick and can damage it. We check the brick and the existing mortar first.

How long before the new lime looks like the old?

Lime lightens as it cures and weathers in over months. It may look fresher at first, then settle closer to the old joints.

Do I need permission to repoint a listed house?

Often, yes, because repointing changes the look and fabric of the wall. Speak to your council's conservation officer before any work starts on a listed building, and we will follow what they agree.
