Brick and stone pointing

Every wall loses its pointing in the end, and Lincoln has a mix of brick terraces and older stone that each need their own approach. The goal is the same either way: joints that keep the rain out but still let the wall dry.

For brick terraces we offer brick repointing in a mix matched to the brick. For stone and for older brick laid in lime, our lime pointing service is the better fit.

A garden or boundary wall can be rebuilt through our bricklaying work, and cracks over windows are covered on our page for lintel repair in Lincoln. The pointing guide has more detail if you want it.

Terraces and older stone

Victorian terraces in Lincoln are mostly soft brick in lime, and many have had one round of cement repointing at some point. Where that cement is harder than the brick, it holds water at the face and frost does the rest. Brick faces breaking away around sound-looking joints are the sign.

The older stone buildings on the hill have thick walls and wide lime joints, sometimes with small packing stones in them. These need raking out by hand and building back up in layers, and we leave the stone itself untouched as far as possible.

When to think about repointing

  • Mortar soft enough to pick out by hand
  • Brick faces breaking off around cement joints
  • Stone surfaces turning powdery
  • Damp coming through a solid wall
  • Weeds rooted in the pointing
  • Gaps around the chimney flashing

How we work

  3. Remove and fill

Old joints are cut out carefully and refilled in thin layers.

Questions about pointing in Lincoln

How much does it cost to repoint a house in Lincoln?

Repointing one elevation of a standard terrace, front or rear, is from £1,850. The same for a standard semi-detached house is from £2,450. Stone walls with wide joints, chimneys, scaffold or a lot of hard cement to remove take the price higher, and we confirm it from photos. Front and rear done together start from £3,700 for a terrace and £4,900 for a semi, or from £4,625 and £6,125 in lime.

Is lime pointing more expensive than cement?

Lime is slower to lay and cure, so it can take a little longer. On a wall built in lime it is the right choice, because cement can damage the brick or stone over time.

Can you repoint a chimney stack on its own?

Yes. A stack catches rain and wind on all four sides, so it often wears out well before the walls below. We can repoint it on its own, with scaffold or a roof ladder as the job needs.

Will repointing stop the draught through my wall?

Open joints can let air through, especially around windows. Repointing closes them and often makes a noticeable difference.

Can I stay in the house while you work?

Yes. Repointing is done from outside. It is dusty while the old mortar comes out, so keeping windows shut on that side helps.
