Joints that keep the weather out

Rain hits a brick wall, runs down the face and drips off at the bottom. That only works while the joints are full. Once they wear back, each joint becomes a small ledge where water settles and soaks in, and in cold weather that water freezes and widens the gap.

We fix that with brick repointing, cutting the joints back and building the mortar up again in layers. Victorian brick and softer stock often needs a lime mix, which is the focus of our period house pointing page.

Cracks running up from window corners are a separate problem, covered under lintel repair in Stockport. For more about joint profiles and why mortar should be weaker than brick, try the pointing guide.

Three kinds of building, three approaches

Victorian terraces in Stockport are generally solid walled and were laid in lime. Where they have been repointed in a strong cement, the faces of the bricks may be breaking away along the joint lines. We take care removing that old cement so the edges of the bricks survive.

Interwar semis are tougher and usually suit a cement mortar, though bays and chimneys need checking. Older town centre buildings can be tall and carry decorative brickwork, so access and matching the original mortar matter more there. Send photos and we will tell you which mortar we would use and why.

Signs worth acting on

  • Mortar loose enough to rake out with a finger
  • Joints set back from the face
  • Gaps along the top of a gable
  • Tide marks of damp indoors
  • Weeds growing out of the wall
  • Bricks crumbling at their edges

Stockport homeowners ask

How much is repointing in Stockport?

A standard terraced front or rear is from £1,850 and a semi-detached front or rear is from £2,450 per side. Bigger walls, chimneys, decorative brickwork, scaffold over a busy pavement or badly worn bricks all add to the cost.

Will new pointing look patchy next to the old?

New mortar always looks fresh at first, but if the sand and the joint finish match, the difference fades as it weathers. We mix samples so the colour is close once dry.

Do I need to repoint the bay window as well?

Bays catch rain on three sides and their small piers often wear faster than the main wall. If the bay joints are soft, it makes sense to include them while the scaffold is up.

Can you remove old cement pointing without damaging the bricks?

Yes, with care. We cut along the centre of the joint and pick out the rest, rather than grinding straight into the brick edges. On soft Victorian bricks this is slower but it protects the face.

Can repointing help with damp inside?

It can if rain is getting in through failed joints. Damp from other causes, such as a leaking gutter or bridged cavity, needs those fixing too. We will tell you what we think is going on from the photos.
