Pointing that stands up to the coast

Houses near the sea take more weather than most. Wind pushes rain sideways into the joints, salt dries out of the brick, and exposed walls wear unevenly. On older Southport villas, the side facing the sea can need repointing long before the rest.

Our brick repointing service deals with that weathered mortar. For Victorian brick laid in lime, we often recommend our lime mortar pointing, as it lets salt and moisture move out through the joint rather than the brick.

Rust cracks above windows need different work, which is covered on our page about lintel repair in Southport. If a boundary wall has been loosened by the wind, our bricklaying service can rebuild it.

Coastal wear on Victorian brick

Salt brought in on the wind gets into the brick and mortar. As the wall dries, the salt crystallises near the surface, and over time that breaks down soft brick faces and weak joints. Where hard cement has been used, the damage moves into the brick, so the right mortar matters even more by the sea.

Villas often have tall chimney stacks, gables and bays that catch the wind. Terraces tend to wear most on the end walls and rear elevations. We look at every exposed face and price only the ones that actually need it.

Weather damage to look for

  • White salt marks on the brickwork
  • Joints worn deepest on the windward side
  • Soft brick faces crumbling at the edges
  • Chimney joints open at the top courses
  • Mortar loose around a bay window
  • Damp patches after driving rain

Repointing an exposed wall

  1. Send photos

Shots of each side show us where the wear is worst.

  2. Pick the mortar

We choose lime or cement to suit the brick and the exposure.

  3. Point in calm weather

Joints are raked, damped and filled when wind and rain allow.

  4. Protect while curing

Covers keep new mortar from drying too fast or getting wet.

Southport repointing questions

Does salt air damage pointing?

Yes, over time. Salt crystals form as the wall dries and break down weak mortar and soft brick. A suitable, breathable mortar helps the wall cope.

How much does a repoint cost here?

We charge from £1,850 for a standard terraced front or rear and from £2,450 for the front or rear of a standard semi. Villas, tall stacks, bays and extra scaffold usually take the figure above that, and detached houses are priced from photos.

Can you work in windy weather?

We avoid pointing in strong wind and heavy rain because the mortar dries badly. We plan around the forecast and use covers to protect fresh joints.

Should I repoint the whole house or just the sea side?

If the other walls are sound, just the worn sides may be enough. We will tell you honestly which walls need it now and which can wait.

What is the best joint finish for an exposed wall?

A profile that sheds water, such as a bucket handle or weatherstruck joint, is usually best. Recessed joints can hold water on exposed walls.
