Coastal air and window heads
Steel and salt air do not get on. On houses near the coast, any steel built into the brickwork over a window is under constant attack, and once it rusts it swells and lifts the bricks above it. That is why rust cracks are such a common sight over Southport windows.
Our lintel repair and replacement service takes out the corroded steel and fits a new lintel with proper protection from water. Large bay windows on villas need extra care, and the lintel replacement guide covers how that is done.
If the weather has also worn the joints, see our page on repointing in Southport. Spalled or cracked bricks can be cut out through our brickwork repairs.

Villas and terraces by the sea
Victorian villas here often have wide bay windows with stone heads, brick arches or steel sections set in by later owners. Bays carry a lot of load across several openings, and when one head fails the movement can show across the whole front of the bay.
On the terraces, salt laden wind drives moisture into exposed walls and reaches any iron or steel in the head. Rust expands to many times the size of the original metal, so even a thin lintel can crack the brick around it. Replacing it and fitting a cavity tray or protective bed stops the problem repeating.

Southport lintel questions
Is rust staining above my window a bad sign?
It usually means there is steel in the head that has started to corrode. Catching it while the bricks are still in line keeps the repair smaller. Send us a photo and we will look.
Can you replace the lintel over a bay window?
Yes. Bays need careful propping because the load spreads over several openings. We work out the support from photos and a visit before we quote.
What will a new lintel cost?
Lintels are priced by length, starting at £1,850 for 1 to 1.5 metres and reaching £3,450 for over 3.5 up to 4 metres. Bay heads, upper floor scaffold or extra spalled brick can push a job above its band. Openings wider than 4 metres are priced from photos.
Does sea air affect new lintels?
Any steel near the coast needs protecting. A galvanised lintel bedded properly, with a tray and weep vents to keep water off it, gives it the best chance.
My stone window head has cracked. Can it stay?
If the crack is fine and the stone has not dropped, it can often be kept with a hidden lintel fitted behind. If it has broken through, we can talk about options.
