Repointing for Bolton homes

Much of Bolton is built in red brick, from long mill-town terraces to Edwardian semis and interwar houses. On all of them the mortar is the part that wears first. Once joints start to crumble or sit back from the brick face, rain soaks into the wall instead of running off it.

Our brick repointing service cuts out the failed mortar and fills each joint again, finished to match the rest of the house. If your home is one of the older terraces built with soft brick and lime, we may suggest lime pointing for period houses instead of a hard cement mix.

Where frost has already cracked the face of some bricks, we replace those at the same time through our brickwork repairs service. Our brickwork pointing guide explains the whole process if you want to read up first.

What we look for on Bolton brickwork

Terraced streets take the weather on long, exposed front and gable walls, and the chimney stacks are often the first place mortar gives way. On these houses we check the stacks, the gable end and the bay or window heads as well as the main front.

On Edwardian and interwar semis the problem is more often patchy: one wall facing the prevailing wind, a section under a leaking gutter, or old repairs done in a mortar that no longer matches. We price for what actually needs doing rather than the whole house by default.

Signs your joints need attention

  • Mortar you can scrape out with a key
  • Joints sitting well back from the brick face
  • Gaps where mortar has dropped out
  • Damp patches on inside walls
  • Plants or moss growing in the joints
  • Flaking brick faces next to failed mortar

From photo to finished wall

  1. Send us photos

A wide shot of the wall and a close-up of the joints is usually enough to start.

  2. Get a written price

We quote from the photos or arrange a visit if the wall needs a closer look.

  3. Rake out and repoint

Old mortar is cut back to a sound depth and the joints are filled in layers.

  4. Finish and tidy

Joints are struck to match the house and the dust is cleared away.

Bolton repointing questions

How do I know if my Bolton house needs repointing?

Try scraping a joint with a key. If the mortar comes out as sand, or the joints are sitting back from the face of the brick, the wall is due. Send us a photo and we will tell you how much of it needs doing.

Can you just repoint the chimney?

Yes. Chimney stacks often fail before the rest of the house because they take the most weather. We can repoint a stack on its own if the walls below are still sound.

Should a Bolton terrace be repointed in lime?

If the terrace was built with soft brick and lime mortar, lime is usually the better choice because it lets the wall breathe. We check the brick and the existing mortar before recommending a mix.

How long does repointing take?

It depends on how much wall there is, how high it is and the weather. Once we have seen photos we can tell you roughly how many days your job will take.

What does repointing a Bolton terrace cost?

One side of a standard terraced house is from £1,850, and one side of a standard semi is from £2,450. Doing the front and rear together adds the two prices. Scaffold for upper floors, chimney stacks and badly failed joints can take the price higher, and we tell you before any work starts.
