Pointing for older brick

Historic brick buildings and Victorian terraces were laid in lime mortar. Repointed carefully in lime, they stay dry and sound. Repointed in hard cement, they tend to suffer.

Our lime and mortar pointing uses natural hydraulic lime or lime putty, chosen to suit the brick. Harder, later brick can take standard brick repointing in a softer cement mix.

Where frost has broken the brick faces, we cut out and replace them through brickwork repairs. For cracked window heads, see lintel repair in Worcester.

Caring for historic and Victorian walls

Older brickwork was made to breathe. The soft brick and lime joints take in rain and let it dry out. Cement pointing, added in later repairs, stops that and pushes moisture into the brick, which then flakes in frost. We see this most around cement patches on old fronts.

Raking out on these walls is slow work. Cement is removed by hand where possible so the brick edges stay crisp, and lime is pressed in thin layers and kept damp as it cures. The result looks right and lets the wall dry out as it was built to.

Signs older brick needs help

  • Brick faces breaking away near cement joints
  • Soft lime joints washed out
  • White salts on the brick surface
  • Damp inside a thick solid wall
  • Rounded brick edges from old raking
  • Gaps at the top of garden walls

How we point older walls

  1. Photograph the wall

Close views tell us the brick and the mortar.

  2. Choose the lime

We pick the mix and quote in writing.

  3. Rake by hand

Old joints come out without harming the brick edges.

  4. Fill and cure

Lime goes in thin layers and is protected while it sets.

Worcester pointing questions

What does lime repointing cost in Worcester?

A lime terraced front or rear starts from £2,312.50 and a semi from £3,062.50. In cement, a terraced front or rear is from £1,850. Scaffold, chimneys, careful cement removal or awkward access can raise the price.

Is my building suitable for cement pointing?

If it was built in lime with soft brick, usually not. Cement can trap moisture in old brick and cause the faces to break away. We look at the brick and the existing mortar before advising.

Can new lime match the colour of my old joints?

Yes. We pick a sand and lime that sit with the old joints, and on a prominent wall we can lay a small test panel first so you can see it before the whole wall is done.

Do I need consent to repoint a listed building?

Listed buildings can need consent for repointing, especially if the mortar or joint style changes. Check with the council before work begins and we will follow what they ask for.

How long does lime take to cure?

Lime cures slowly and needs protecting from frost, heavy rain and hot sun for some time after it is laid. We plan the work for milder months and cover the wall while it sets.
