Why valley walls need good joints

Walls that stay wet for long spells lose their mortar faster than those that dry quickly. In a valley the air is often damp and walls take a while to dry after rain, so the joints in Stalybridge terraces see a lot of wear. When they open up, water gets behind the face of the stone or brick.

Older stone and brick houses here were built with lime, and our lime and mortar pointing service puts lime back where it belongs. For later brickwork that was laid in cement, we use a matching mix through our standard brick repointing.

Learn more about joint finishes and curing in the brickwork pointing guide. If a window head on the house has cracked, our page on lintel repair in Stalybridge covers that side of things.

Stone, brick and the mortar between

Stone terraces are often built with wider, more irregular joints than brick, and those joints carry much of the wall's moisture out. Cement pointing smeared across them seals the stone in, and the faces then start to scale. We take that cement out carefully and repoint in lime, keeping the joint slightly back so the stone edges stay visible.

Brick terraces in the valley have tighter joints and usually softer bricks than modern ones. They suffer most on chimney stacks and gable ends, where wind drives rain straight at the wall. We check those high points closely, because a failed stack lets water down into the house long before the front wall shows it.

Signs the pointing has had its day

  • Sandy mortar trickling out of joints
  • Stone faces scaling or crumbling
  • Cement pointing standing proud of the wall
  • Damp spots on walls inside
  • Ferns or moss in the joints
  • Water staining under a chimney stack

How the work is done

  1. WhatsApp a picture

A photo of the wall and a close look at the joints gets us started.

  2. Price in writing

We confirm the mix and set out the cost in a written quote.

  3. Rake and repoint

Joints are cleared, damped and filled in thin layers.

  4. Cure and protect

The new joints are kept covered so they cure slowly.

Stalybridge pointing questions

Can you repoint a stone house in lime?

Yes. Lime suits stone well because it stays slightly flexible and lets moisture out through the joint. We use natural hydraulic lime or lime putty depending on how exposed the wall is.

How long before lime pointing is fully cured?

Lime hardens slowly, over weeks rather than days. For the first stretch it needs protecting from frost, heavy rain and strong sun, which is why we cover the wall with hessian and plan the work around the forecast.

Why has the cement pointing on my stone wall damaged the stone?

Cement is harder and less porous than most building stone. Water that gets into the wall can only escape through the stone face, so the face takes the frost damage instead of the joint.

What is the starting price for repointing?

On a standard terraced house the front or the rear is from £1,850 while on a semi-detached it is from £2,450 a side. Stone walls with wide joints, high gables, chimney stacks and scaffold on sloping ground all push the price up. Lime pointing, which most older stone here needs, is from £2,312.50 for a terraced front or rear.

Is spring a good time to book?

Spring and early autumn suit lime best, as the weather is mild and frost is less likely. Get in touch early, because the drier months are when most people want their walls doing.
