The right mortar for older walls

Older buildings rely on their mortar being softer than the brick or stone around it. That way the joint does the wearing and the wall can breathe.

For Victorian terraces and stone buildings our lime pointing service keeps to that principle. Where a wall is newer and harder, standard brick repointing in a matched cement mix is the better fit.

Bricks already damaged by frost can be swapped through our brickwork repairs, and for cracks over windows see lintel repair in Northampton.

Pointing Victorian brick and older stone

Victorian brick terraces in Northampton were built in lime, and many have been partly repointed in cement since. Where that has happened, the brick faces next to the cement often flake while the lime joints nearby are just worn. Removing the cement and repointing in lime is the long-term fix.

Older stone buildings need even more care. Stone joints are often irregular, and the stone can be soft enough to crumble if hard mortar is pushed against it. We rake out by hand and repoint in lime, building up deep joints in thin layers.

When old pointing needs renewing

  • Stone edges crumbling at the joints
  • Cement pointing standing proud of the brick
  • Lime joints recessed and powdery
  • Damp patches inside thick walls
  • Salt marks on brick or stone
  • Bricks cracking in frosty weather

  1. Photograph the walls

Send us photos of the brick or stone and a close-up of a joint.

  2. Plan the mix

We agree lime or cement with you and send a written quote.

  3. Rake and build up

Joints are raked by hand where needed and filled in thin layers.

Northampton repointing questions

How much is repointing in Northampton?

Standard repointing on a terraced front or rear is from £1,850. In lime, which older walls usually need, it is from £2,312.50 for the same elevation. Chimneys, scaffold, tall walls and very worn joints push the price up, and stone buildings are priced from photos.

Can you repoint stone as well as brick?

Yes. Stone walls need a different approach, with hand raking and lime mortar, but the aim is the same: sound joints that let the wall dry out.

Why are my bricks flaking next to new pointing?

If the newer pointing is a hard cement on a soft brick, the brick takes the moisture and the frost damage. Replacing that pointing with lime usually stops it getting worse.

What happens if it rains while you are pointing?

Fresh mortar must not be washed out, so we cover the wall and stop work in heavy rain. Lime is especially sensitive and is kept covered while it sets.

Can you point a wall that has been painted?

It depends on the paint and how well it is stuck. Send us a picture and we will give you an idea of what is possible.
